What is a Pap Test?

A Pap test (also called a Pap smear) is a simple procedure that checks for changes in the cells of the cervix. It’s one of the most effective ways to screen for cervical cancer and detect abnormal cells early, before they become a serious problem.

The test involves gently collecting a small sample of cells from the cervix, which is then analyzed in a laboratory. Most women describe it as mildly uncomfortable but quick, and the benefits far outweigh the momentary discomfort.

Why is a Pap Test Important?

  • Early detection saves lives – Cervical cancer is highly treatable when found early.

  • Screens for abnormal cells – The test can detect precancerous changes long before they develop into cancer.

  • Helps prevent cancer – Regular Pap tests are part of preventive care recommended for women between the ages of 21 and 65.

  • Peace of mind – Normal results can reassure you about your cervical health.

Most women between the ages of 21 and 65 should have regular Pap tests. The exact frequency depends on your age and medical history.

The test may cause mild discomfort or pressure, but it usually takes only a few minutes. Most women describe it as more awkward than painful.

Yes. If you already have a requisition, the results will go directly to your doctor. If you don’t, our nurse practitioner can provide one.

Guidelines vary, but in general:

  • Ages 21–29: every 3 years

  • Ages 30–65: every 3–5 years, depending on your history and whether HPV testing is done as well

  • Avoid intercourse, douching, or using vaginal medications 24–48 hours before the test.
